How On iOS 8.1 Change Root Password Using MTerminal

If are the owner of jailbroken iPhone or iPad then to prevent your device from being attacked it is recommended to change the default root password.

By default, every iPhone or iPad’s root password is ‘alpine’. But if you want to keep your device more secure, change your root password to unique one should be the first thing after jailbreaking your device.


Unfortunately, MobileTerminal the terminal package which lets you execute commands on jailbroken iPhone or iPad hasn’t been updated to support iOS 8 yet. Although there is another free alternative to MobileTerminal known as MTerminal. It brings iOS 8 support. The gesture actions include arrow and control keys, insert/delete, Esc/Tab, fullscreen mode, paste and other options.

How On iOS 8.1 Change Root Password


Step 1. Install Mobile Terminal.

Step 2. Open Cydia.

Step 3. Click on the Search tab.

Step 4. Search for MTerminal.

Step 5. Click on MTerminal from the search results.

Step 6. Click on Install, followed by Confirm to install MTerminal on your device.

Step 7. Now Launch the MTerminal app from the Home screen.

Step 8. Type su root at the prompt and click on the return key.

Step 9. You will be prompted to enter the password, enter alpine and click the return key.

Step 10. Type passwd .

Step 11.You will be prompted to enter the new password, enter a new password and tap the return key.

Step 12. You will be prompted to re-enter the new password, enter the new password again and click the return key. (Note that for security reasons your keypresses will not be displayed on the terminal screen)

You should also change the password of the mobile user, which is the regular user account on your device.

Step 13. Enter passwd mobile and click on the return key.

Step 14.You will be asked to enter the new password. Enter alpine, and click on the return key to go next.

Step 15. You will be asked to re-enter the new password, enter alpine again and click the return key.

After you will finish your work, your old root and mobile user passwords should now be changed to the new password you just set.

iOS 8.1 change root password process takes some time but now your jailbroken iOS 8.1 device will be in safe using MTerminal.
